You didn't need the Verizon DSL software for either computer to connect to the internet. Just plug your Mac it in to the router or use a wireless connection and it will work.

To help you configure your Verizon email accounts on your Mac.

Verizon
pop3 incoming: incoming.verizon.net
smtp outgoing: outgoing.verizon.net

Plug a router into the dsl modem. If you have multiple computers, I would recommend using a Pre-N wireless router so you won't have to run a cable to your second machine. Install a wireless adapter in the second machine. Typically the "mode" of the modem is changed to a throughput device to the router. In the router (wireless or regular) you enter your dsl user info/password, etc and the router establishes the connection through the modem. Plug your computer into the router or establish the wireless connection with the added adapter in your second machine and you'll be off and running.

All you need is a router or a switch. Run the network cable from your modem to the router and then just run a cable from the router to both of your computers.
