I was thinking about working at Starbucks part-time or something, but I really can only take a job or do something for 6 weeks or so. Should I just veg at home?

Oh, just 6 weeks? By the time you train at a job you'd be leaving (right when you became worth your pay). I can't think of any boss that wouldn't be pissed about that.

Heck, I'd just veg.

If you think you're gonna be bored, I'd volunteer at a shelter, or children's hospital or convalescent home or something. Do yourself a little good. :D

Happy summer...

...a (hopefully) soon-to-be-teacher.

:D

Whether or not you work is up to you. A lot depends on whether or not you need the cash, and if you have other things to do at home. If you are married and/or have kids, you certainly want to spend some time with your family.

That said, I used to work for a temporary service (Kelly Services, etc.) during the summer. You go to the local office, sign-up, take a couple of computer-based tests, etc. They "interview" you and send you to a job that meets your skills (usually office work.)

From Kelly Services, one summer I was a file clerk. Another summer I took inventory at a department store. One summer I was a shuttle van driver. Another summer I was an intake clerk in an emergency room. This was in Orlando, and there was a lot of work.

The pay wasn't too bad, and the extra cash was nice. Actually, I learned a lot on those summer jobs.

So - if you are in a medium-sized city or larger, check that out. Summer is a BIG time for temporary workers, because the regular workers want a vacation.

Also - my daughter (in college) is a waitress ... excuse me - SERVER... at a mid-price restaurant. When she feels like working a shift or two, she just calls-in and they schedule her. They are happy to have her, and she can make $150 on a good night. She also worked a few months at Cracker Barrel (chain restaurant) and can go into any Cracker Barrel and get a job, because she's already trained.

Try an employment agency. They have temp jobs or summer ads in the paper offer only that season for work. The assignments are brief and the employers there know that it is only for a brief hire and they often may ask you back each summer instead of having a new crew each time.

A lot of house-painting, paving, or light contract work companies hire during the summer.

I was a college prof and grabbed a brush, but I had a full 3 months.

You could work at an amusment park or some place that is only open in the summers, if working with a lot of teenagers and college students doesn't bother you.

Why don't you take some summer classes for 6 weeks. Teach some type of art or craft to children. Embroidery classes, painting, pottery, anything that you know you can teach.
