Can you explain how to run in safe mode? I am not tech savvy in the slightest so please explain in great detail. If I press the start button nothing happens except the pointer becomes an hourglass and if I right click on a program then nothing happens. How can I get around that problem? Will I have to erase my hard drive or something? Is so what do you do or how do you do that? Who can I contact to have them help me also? Sorry for the long question but thanks to all who answer.

My computer is about 2 and a half years old if that makes a difference.

My comp was working fine yesterday for most of the day. I was playing a game online and all of the sudden it froze. After that I just pressed the restart button and didnt touch it all night. Another theory of mine is my background. I like to change my background every once and a while and I go to google images and pick one that I like. Could something be wrong with the background that I chose?

You should be happy :at least the Start button appears!
You should give more details to suggest solutions here.
Make
How old ? 3 or 5 or 10 years
Did it work fine till yesterday ?

Are you running XP ?
How many programs appear along with Start BUTTON ?
How much memory your computer has ?
How many programs appear in your "All programs " etc .
Para two :
Try this for some improvement.
Start computer Press F8.
Select Safe Mode.
If the computer boots up :
Select My Computer :
C: Properties
Disk cleanup
More options
Delete all Old System Restore files. ( latest one, will remain)
Tools. Run check disk/defragment.
Now restart the computer.
Look at the start up programs appearing in Task Bar.
Disable all except one antivirus program ( /VOLcontrol icon/Time remains)
Connect to Internet ( what is the connection dialup or broadband?)
Open IE. report any progress here .
for more suggestions.

Hmm.. Once you are sure that no one tampered with the hardware, and you are using windows

When you push the power button this time, start pressing F8 key like hell. Then select start in safe mode from the menu.

Once windows loads, you select Run in Start Menu and type MSCONFIG in the box and press Enter.

Select Diagnostic start up, and press OK. Restart. IF comp is unable to start, you needs to reload windows, else next time, In msconfig select selective startup and choose ! option per restart ( 1. Select "Process System.ini" and restart, 2nd Select Boot.inin and restart and so on).

Check your startup programs and services to avoid loading the ones that are not necessary. ( Do you really want GoogleTalk and Yahoo msngr to start the moment you start your comp?)

Finally get yourselfa good Antivirus.

i'm questioning you hit something that takes you to short shrink keys. occasion: in case you hit 'Alt' and then 'Tab' your tab key won't do what this is think to. Assuming you have homestead windows, in case you seem to the backside precise on your keyboard, you will see the 'alt' key, a key with a window on it, and(forgive me for a manner i'm describing this) a key that appears like a highlighted graph, then the 'administration' key. maximum in all threat you will have hit the window key or the highlighted graph key and then pressed yet another key on the comparable time on the same time as attempting to sort the two a be conscious or a extensive type. in case you are able to remember what you picked before your keyboard went on the fritz then hit those 2 keys returned. each and every so often hitting the 'esc' key quite a few cases will end a shortcut technique.

Your OS is probably damaged. If XP try repairing it. Try this:

Afterwards, go to safe mode and scan for virus.
