It is referred to as "Racing Red" or "Italian Red," and it is so referenced for a reason. Ferrari started life as a racing team that ran Alfa Romeo cars, and then evolving to make their own cars.

At the time, Italian teams would paint their cars Red; British would be green, German White or Silver (and ever notice how those colors are connected with such makes just as Red is with Italian cars?).

As such, most Ferraris that would be seen in pictures would be in their full Italian Racing Red glory... and it was a look that people wanted to copy when it came time to buy a street car from the company.

These many years later it is still the color of their Formula 1 livery, but also the one color most recognized as "Ferrari."

Edit - the paint is no more expensive or difficult to do than any other color that is offerend by the factory.

A lot of it has to do with history. Ferrari used red on almost all of their vintage racing cars.

That is why your true ferrari accianados won't buy yellow or black or silver.

There is a historical connection.

(I had a coworker who had 2 ferraris, and that is what he me)

Tradition, to quote Fiddler on the Roof. The rumor you heard is no longer true. Any more than purple is the color of royalty because it is so expensive to make.

It is a part of their history - RED

If your driving in 5th gear in the red - your flying.

Red is an expensive color to produce, and it is referred as a bleeding color by most painters.
