That is the operating frequency of the processor. Raising it offers higher performance, but usually requires advanced cooling and a lot of computer knowledge, which you obviously don't have. It also voids the warranty, but considering how old the Pentium 3 is the warranty would already be up. And more Hz doesn't make one processor better than another. The type of processor matters the most. In order from best to worst: Core 2, Athlon 64 x2, Athlon 64, Pentium D, Pentium 4. Anything below that sucks. But you need more than 256 mb of ram for a decent computer. At least 512 mb, But I really recommend 1 gigabyte, 2 for high speeds. Proly go with 2 gigs because ram prices are dropping.

Well in order to upgrade the CPU speed there are several things that will have to change. Since you have an 868 Mhz machine the motherboard will have to be changed to one that will handle a higher speed processor. You need a CPU to go with the new motherboard. 2.4, 2.6 are fairly available. You need to decide which Intell or AMD processor you want to use before getting the Motherboard.
Once all that is decided you will need new RAM because what you have will not work at the new CPU speed.
Once all these are changed you probably need a new hard drive (if you want to take advantage of the speed of the system)
with the costs of NEW computers vs the cost of this type upgrade.......buy a new machine.

While you may be able to "tweak" your processor a little faster
in the BIOS (voltage settings) It may become unreliable
Remove the processor to see what type of socket it uses
you may be a ble to find a faster propcessor for your motherboard. Unfortunately it will probably not be the speed you desire.
If you feel adventurousFIRST BE AWARE of all the little Hidden costs. If you purchase a New Motherboard / With processor you may not be able to use your existing memory get the price of new memory also if your windows is an OEM version you may have to purchase an operateing system too.
Most of the other existing components should work
But if you want to keep your data I would suggest a new SATA hard disk and slave you old hard drive to the system
Obviously after all the costs are considered you may just want to get a whole new system and slave you old HDD.

Even if you buy a new CPU it will not go in the slot in your present mother board. ( check this)
My Sony VAIO Fx 215: processor is 600 MHz AMD and I too have only 256 MB RAM. Working fine for past seven or eight years running WindowsXP Pro SP2 . ( Hard disk was changed to 40MB)
If you want to watchVideo/ play games etc better to buy a new system.
Latest is Dual Core Intel Processor. Select the AGP/Video card also carefully.

You could overclock via the BIOS. No guarantees that you can because it depends on if you motherboard can do this. There won't be much to gain by doing this - nothing really noticeable. A new processor with higher "hz" would do it, but you need to know what brand and model of motherboard you have, then check at their website to see what processors are compatible. I think the highest a P3 made was a 1.2ghz, but I won't swear by that. If you want to go higher, you'd need to spend some money to upgrade your system.

Hz means it is at what frequency the signals are transmitted from the processor. If you want to change the HZ in your computer you need to change the processor.
But don't worry about that if you want to go for an upgrade you have to options one is processor and the other is RAM. I belive Upgrading RAM is better than upgrading Processor.
If you are satisfied with your performance than don't go for processor upgrade. If you have Low ram it is better to upgrade that.

HOLY ****. i'm surprised your computer can even run XP.
You need. 1) A newer processor. I would suggest at LEAST a 1.5GHz. You MUST get more RAM. again at LEAST 512MB.
These are bare minimums. Keep that in mind.
You're better off looking at a newer computer.
