The vertebrate classes are fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Fish do not have an oustanding characteristic; for example, many invertebrate creatures possess gills, and scales are also not unique to fish. Amphibians and retiles are defined by sets of characteristics, and neither can be defined by a single one. However, all vertebrates with feathers are birds.

All invertebrates share a lack of a spinal column. Any animal without a spinal column is an invertebrate.

All arthropods have jointed appendages. Any invertebrate with jointed appendages is an arthropod.

Human beings are members of phylum Chordata and class Mammalia.
