I'm in the UK, I bought it in France & it never occurred to me it'd have a 2-pin plug. So can I change it to a 3-pin, and what about the earth? Aren't their appliances earthed? I've tried to find an adapter, without success. Enlightenment needed, thanks!

Manpig - the pins are round, ours are square, so it won't fit in the socket.

Yes, you can cut off the two-pin plug and fit a 3-pin plug.
In France the earth pin is on the socket, with a slot for it on the plug. Not all appliances are earthed, and they use a (cheaper) two-pin plug on non-earthed appliances.
In the UK the live and neutral slots on a socket are closed with a plastic slide, opened by the (longer) earth pin, so we use a three-pin plug even on non-earthed appliances.
Most lamps are not earthed.

Its no problem. Just cut off the 2 pin plug and connect the wires between Live and Neutral on a UK 3 pin plug. As someone else says, most lamps are not earthed anyway.

You could always buy a 'shaving plug' for use with any appliances with 2 pins....the shaving plug converts it to a 3 pin by placing the 2 pin plug into the back of it

Sounds like it might be the wall socket and not the plug.If it is just the plug then relatively straight forward job. If it is the wall socket then be very careful, you don't get many chances playing around with electricity! Before you attempt even to look at the problem make sure the electricity supply is off. If you don't know what your doing get somebody in who does.
