I have a standard wood deck that I am tired of staining every year.
Is there any reason NOT to put indoor/ outdoor carpet over it?

All valid answers, and certainly your choice, but Wolfatrest offers a list, and I personally wouldn't do carpet,,,although you can, without nailing or gluing it to the deck. One of my issues beyond what else has been said is that the carpet surface will conform to every joint, every open seam, and even the best exterior grade outdoor carpeting will be subject not only to the elements, but to it's general wear in it's intended purpose.

You can find what I think they call something like artifical turf that comes in different colors that will hold up to the elements. Carpet will not, it will mold, rot, and stain. Sounds like you need a sealer put on your deck after you stain. It helps prevent fading from the sun. Check with your local Home Depot or Lowe's and they should be able to help with your problem or they should carry the turf. Good Luck!!

Your deck is wooden, if it isn't sealed every once in a while it will rot. Carpet will also cause it to stay wet much longer when it rains which will speed the rotting. You are likely to get a good healthy growth of mold and/or fungus growing underneath the carpet.

Since the carpet will hold moisture, it may make any existing moisture problem worse (like mildew).

you could do it, but your chances of rotting out the deck boards is high.
