I love Ubuntu and OpenSuSe. My desktop preference is definitely Gnome.

If you are new to linux you should probably start off with Ubuntu because not only is it the most user friendly for the people switching from windows, but the Ubuntu forums are filled with a lot of help and support.

Having multiple computers with both set up I can honestly say I use XP more often. Beryl is awesome and I see Linux has its place for storage, surfing and as a media center but I game. XP just does more things, is less of a hassle and well worth the measely $80 for the OEM copy. $80 is nothing for all it does when the average game costs $50. Not to mention there is more freeware and actual support for XP than Linux.

If you want to try Ubuntu, but don't want to loose Windows, just setup a dual boot, so when your PC boots up, you can choose wether you want to boot into Windows or Ubuntu.

I think most other linux distrobutions have a similar dual boot function.
