What a horrible story. 18 year old babysitter laid toddlers down for a nap and then took one her self. When she woke up both toddlers were missing and found in nearby pond. This girl is a relative. Should she be held accountable? Was this just a mistake that she will have to live with for the rest of her life? Do people not watch the news and see what happens when you leave a toddler unsupervised properly. Good Grief...I think I might just handcuff my toddler to me for now on. It is so scarey.

Susan...glad you made it through that ok. Stories like yours make me aware to just watch a little bit closer and yes I agree...should've would've could've will always be there. I do agree about parents napping with there kids. I have done it in the past if I were sick or something but I did secure the doors before hand and I learned with my first child..the higher the lock on the door and the harder to unlock the better so I have always had a high lock on my door that is tricky to unlock. I have security things on my windows as well so they can only be open so far.

I took a look at your link. This is so sad. Yes I believe the babysitter should wear quite a lot of blame in this. She was 18 years old, old enough to still have quite a lot of energy so early in the morning to not need a nap. But there are more people to blame than just the babysitter. With a 2 year old and 20 month old why was it so easy for them to access a pond? Why was this body of water not fenced off from little children? It was not far from the house. Children give parents the slip all the time and to have a pond just sitting there well it was just inviting trouble no matter who was watching the children.
But also, not trying to make light of something so serious and sad but we all do things that are potentially dangerous because we don't see the immediate results straight away when we make hasty decisions. How many of us have laid down with children to convince them to take a nap and then taken one ourselves? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.... I think I'll keep my stones for another time.

She is not at-fault because she was taking a nap. A great many of people take naps with their babies and toddlers and everyone certainly sleeps at night. She is at-fault for not securing the home so they could not get out. I do wonder why she was putting them down in the late morning. That seems odd to me. Toddlers nap in the afternoon, mine included. It doesn't surprize me that they didn't go to sleep at that time. Still , very very sad.

well, I was once that toddler, family party , everyone thought someone else was watching me and wasn't; I wandered away , 3 houses and walked into a 6 foot built in pool; luckily my piercing scream brought out the old woman to retrieve; it is a tragic accident; you lock doors etc and they know how to open them ; everyone will live that moment over and over, could have should have; a tragedy.
