Where does the phrase 'my friends electric' come from?

Is it simply paraphrasing the Gary Numan song 'Are Friends Electric'? Or is it from Philip K ***** book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' (on which the Numan song is based..and I haven't read :D ). Or something else...

Could be Whitman's Leaves of Grass (I sing the body electric...) and he writes about friends, etc. or it could not be related in any way to Whitman. :)
