hi, my dell laptop came pre installed with windows. And it messed up, so i brought a copy of ebay nd it come with a key.
Now i get a notice saying its not genuine....

what can i do to validate my old key?

it is stuck under the laptop.

If both copies of XP are the same version then use your disk but the key from the original.

There is a key update tool at http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/PKUInstructions.aspx
You can try this first using the original key.

You got jipped on eBay. Good luck. You should have gotten a restore CD from Dell.

Unless its teh same version matching whats on the COA sticker, you cant.
You will need a CD thats the same as COA, ie, XP Home needs a XP Home OEM CD.

try ringing windows itsself and asking them the problem if not try looking on serials.ws you will frind new keys there. good luck
