Use both a firewall and anti-virus program. And keep the anti-virus signatures up-to-date. If you don't keep the signatures current, your software won't be able to "see" the plethora of new virii that come out everyday.
Zone Alarm is a decent software firewall. Norton and McAfee are both very good anti-virus software. But these tend to be pricey. So, look around for something that does the job and fits your pocketbook.

Download a antivirus program. If you don’t have it.
AVG and Avast has some free ones.
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html
There are more free antivirus programs out there. What’s the best of them I don’t know, but Avast and AVG are good.
I use Norton Internet Security.
Also try scanning with some antivirus online scanner like http://www.bitdefender.com/ and a security/antivirus scanner like http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/home.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=QVLBZTVOGXFSTZHSZPW&bhcp=1
You also need a firewall. If you don’t have one that is. ZoneAlarm has a free one.

Disable Windows firewall if it’s not disabled automatically. That is if you download another firewall.
Also have some spyware/adware removers like Ad Aware SE Personal and Spybot-S&D.

( Download Ad Aware here http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html )
AVG also have a free anti spyware. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
You can also scan with a online anti-spyware scanner like Ewido anti-spyware. http://www.ewido.net/en/
Ewido anti-spyware 4.0 is now AVG anti-spyware 7.5.

*Note: Have only one antivirus program and one firewall installed on you computer.
Adware/spyware removers are ok to have more of.
