Without question, as long are there are things needing repair and construction taking place, there will always be trades work.

As the first answer states, having some education in the trades is a beginning, and actually a never ending process. Learning the "terms" of the trades is one step. Knowing how to read blueprints. Learning not only the "HOW TO" but the "WHY" is totally relevant.

You should expect, as in most other fields, to begin at a low level and work your way up the ladder (no pun intended)

I think answer one's assessment of wages is likely fair, but it's also dependant on WHERE one finds work, and for whom.

As is the case in so many other fields, technology pushes advances constantly. So it is in the trades as well; and keeping current is something you should do. Never believe there is only one way to perform or complete a task, and find the "right" ways, even though there may be many. Also never assume YOU can do it BETTER... at least not outloud.

Teamwork on a job site is extremely important. For one thing It allows you the opportunity to be involved with others in the trade; learning from then; sometimes in the "What NOT to do" sense; but any advancement, is to your credit.

As a "Carpenter" you may also find variations in income in different applications, IE: Framer/Finisher. Obviously there are Unions that are involved in the income levels process, as well as right to work states such as it is here in Florida.

I got into the trades out of a NEED to, in my past and remained active. I suggest certainly learn all you can, and be versatile, but you may find at some point, you want to specialize.
