Historically Dalmatians were used in the days of the horse drawn fire carriage or wagon. Dalmatians and horses for some reason were very compatible as companions and the dog would run in front of the horses as a sort of lead dog to the fires. They continued as the mascot I suppose through tradition as a symbol of good luck for the firemen. I have owned several Dalmatians and fond them to be very intelligent and trustworthy companions.
