Her country of origin has nothing to do with her thoughtlessness. This is just lack of thought. Unless of course this question is a disguised racial slur.
BTW if you only help people *so that* they will thank you, you might as well get used to being angry and embittered. Help because you want to help--or don't bother. I know my friends and family are grateful for my help without having to be showered with expressions of gratitude for every little thing.

OK, i'm probably going to get flamed for this but here goes.
I've worked with loads of South African men and women, and by and large, they all have very abrasive charachters. They don't say please and thank you, they expect to be put first and to always have their way, and if you ever question them god help you. But thats how they've been brought up so you can't really accuse them of being out of line.
This isn't me being racist or anything, this is personal experience, I've worked in South Africa for several months for shipping projects, and they're just like that. In South Africa I just accepted that I had to change my way of work to suit them. But I don't accept it here, the guys I have worked with over here I've had to pull into line time and time again for offending my clients. Common courtesy is never a problem with Americans and Europeans, even the Polish guys at my local carwash who can't speak much have grasped "thanks, have a nice day" to all their customers.
The honestly don't mean to be rude, they just have a different way of life.

No you cant say that some people are just thoughtless or selfish unfortunately, nothing to do with thier country of origin (treading a fine line there)?
I help people all the time and not always get gratitude back.

Please try not to categorise on the basis of race/ethnicity.
Is she shy, or has limited English? If so, it may just be that she didn't know what was expected of her - don't be quick to judge, bring the topic up with her. People from different countries do have very different social lives. In the UK we're very staid (even if we don't realise it) and aware of social protocol, but other cultures are not so.

Did you offer to help expecting gratitude? or , offer to help from the goodness of your heart expecting NOTHING in return?
many good deeds are done daily without somuch as a thanks, if you feel gratified to have helped, what is the problem?

Please do not ever try to help me, I do tend to thank people when they help me, but I don't want people helping just to get a reward, even if it is just a 'thank you' in appreciation.
If you can't help prople because you can, then don't bother, it obviously hurts you too much.
