In one sense Harry Potter books are very good, because they get some younger people reading, who might not otherwise have become readers. They kind of took over that role from sci fi books, thrillers and those horrible romance novels.
On the other hand, we seem to be growing up a monoculture of minds. The variety of available books to buy now is pathetic, because they don't publish anything now unless it is going to potentially sell like Harry Potter.

i wasn't aware that the book section was full of nothing but harry potter talk (i just seen your question in the "just asked" section). just so you know, harry potter is read by people of ALL ages. have you ever read any of the harry potter books? if so, you will recognize that although they are fantasy, that they have complex characters and complex stories and storylines that maybe only adults could comprehend, understand, and remember. and by the way, i'm not some HUGE harry potter fan, but i've read the books and really like the books.

Besides, not everyone reads Harry Potter. Just the majority of people.

grow up! this forum is for books in general. the fact that the new and FINAL harry potter book release is fast approaching is the reason for the surge in questions about the series. maybe there are better books out there but there are also worse books out there and nobody is forcing you to read the books or the questions in this forum related to the books.

Actually, I love Harry Potter, but I also love lots of other books, and read plenty of mature works, including history, biography, fiction, and non-fiction. Just b/c people read and enjoy Harry Potter does not mean that they only read kids books. I actually started reading it so that I could talk to my nieces about it and encourage thier reading. But I found it entertaining and now read it for myself. That's personal choice. You don't like it, don't read it, but let the rest of us choose for ourselves.

We live in the world of massive culture. Popularity is the kee. Best books are never popular bestsellers, but I think that is better that they read Harry Potter than not read at all.
