What is the exact chemistry behind using mordants? How does it form complexes w/ the dye and attach frabrics?

Mordants are usually metal ions with valence above two. And it will form metal complexes with certain dye. I want to know how exactly the electrons go and how it attach to the fabric better than dyeing without mordants. Thanks a lot.
