I think they only need a couple good bullpin pitchers and a reliable ace to be a playoff team, but the owners don't want to spend money so it won't happen.

They don't have the starting pitching to match up in their division--your "reliable ace" comment is dead on. SD has Peavy, Young, Maddux, Wells as their 1-4, Ariz has Webb, RJ, Livan as their 1-3, LA has the best rotation with Penny, Lowe, Wolf, and Schmidt when he comes back, and SF has Zito, Cain, and Lincecum at the top of their rotation.
The problem is if you want good pitching, you have to pay for it, and the Rox showed that they weren't interested in keeping Jennings because they would've had to pay him.
That problem will get worse when they're forced to pay big money to Fuentes (after this year) and Holliday (in two years), and I doubt they will pony up the dough to keep them.
Todd Helton's contract is also an albatross as he's turned into a Mark Grace/Tony Gwynn/Wade Boggs type singles hitter and is making almost 20 million.

The problem with the Rockies is just what you said. They will have to overpay any pitcher (see Mike Hampton) to even consider playing half their games in the rarified air of Colorado. I know other teams pitchers have to pitch their as well, but would you rather pitch there once or twice a year or half your games. The only way the Rockies will ever get a chance is to have a top flight offense with a combination of young pitchers trying to make it and pitchers that are past their primes hoping to have one more good season.

I love that I picked-up Helton and Hawpe for my fantasy team this year. And I wish I grabbed Holliday sooner (I love that "every day is a Holliday" shirt). Wow, talk about amazing feats meaning Tulowitsky's unassisted triple play! Definitely the gem of the season! Sincerely, a New York sports girl, that knows her ball players! I realized long ago the MLB does not start and end here. There are great players everywhere, if you take the time and effort to look beyond yours...

My friend from school's uncle is Dan O'Dowd, the current General Manager of the Colorado Rockies. The GM went to my high school and for that I am proud. But what I am not proud of him for is not spending any money on anything to help improve his team. You can't expect Matt Holliday, Garrett Atkins, and Todd Helton to do every task for you. I've even met Dan, I have a signed ball.

I hate to say it but it sounds like the second coming of the Montreal Expos. I just hope they don't resort to dumping players that they already spend a lot of time and money developing. Unfortunately Coors Field is a pitchers' graveyard so it's going to be tough to sign big name pitchers. So they really should develope pitching in their own system, namely sinker ballers. They will always have hitting so they're ok there.

they are probably the worst team in baseball. THey have great players that are great hitters, the drawback is the pitching and the horrible management. thats why they get sweeped all the time by the dodgers :)

Very good team.
Just need a few breaks here and there.
I think they could compete all season long.
