'Molly', which is short for Margaret, was a common girl's name in the 1920s and 30s, and many people referred to women as 'Molls' (in Australia women were once called 'sheilas' for the same reason).

Because the word was considered 'slang' or low class, and the women who associated with gangsters were said to be low class by the media and society, they were referred to as 'Gangsters' Molls', and the name stuck.

Good luck!
