...and that he does no wrong, and that he knows everything better than everyone else, and keeps wondering why no one understands him (but strongly refuses to try to see other people's point of view because he thinks it's worthless).

He's been continuously giving verbal abuse to everyone close to him, including wife, kids, friends, and other relatives; and this attitude has seriously deprived his kids of confidence and self-esteem. These kids (and their mother) actually believe that they're worthless and can't live without their dad.

He's happiest among people who act as if they adore him no matter what and do anything he says without questions, although this doesn't necessarily mean he respects them.

No, this is not about my boyf or husband.

There must have been something in this man that attracted his wife in the first place, so she obviously saw through his bigoted attitude and as his kids have grown up knowing nothing else, to them, he's just dad and are used to his ways. Thankfully for the kids, they will eventually leave home and settle into a proper relationship, as for the wife, she might then reach a point when she can't take his attitude any longer and probably leave him, but she won't do this until the kids have gone. Like any relationship that has this type of friction, the parties involved are so used to it that it only seems to annoy other people. If I were you, I'd let them get on with it, because you won't be able to change a man like that, no matter how you try, so don't bother. His wife, although probably suffering from low self esteem, will put up with his ways, because she knows, that left on his own, this man would be a complete wreck and unable to cope. His attitude is making up for something lacking in his life, or he was mistreated as a child and has had a chip on his shoulder ever since.

Don't feed into it, meaning don't give him the opportunity. It seems he's too much of a focus. Meaning, turn the tables. Boosting the children's and the wife's self esteem will take the power from him The biggest issue is his wife and children, they need attention. If you and other people recognise this, help his wife and kids especially. If there is no way of changing him, don't waste your time, help the people that are mostly affected by his abuse, it seems they need the attention, not him.

Truth be told, these types of people are nearly a lost cause. Any conflicting opinions are just interpreted as you not knowing what you're talking about and are promptly dismissed as such.

The only real solution short of several of the involved cornering him en masse (since it's difficult to deny a group of people's opinions) is to approach him by telling him how the way he handles things like that make you feel. Since the way you feel isn't really up for debate, he'll at least be more receptive to discussion about that---although you can certainly expect some deflection on his part as he tries to keep his insecurities at bay.

Have you tried talking to the wife about getting help or counseling to deal with him? Maybe if someone took an interest in her and tried to help her, she would see the light and leave him.

I am guessing you are talking about my brother Michael who lives in Holbrook, Mass.

That fat bastard needs a good 10 inch skillet against the back of his head.

sounds like he needs a good smack!
and unfortunately you can't teach an old dog new tricks! Either they have to learn to live with it or learn to leave. This isn't one of those "if you can't beat em; join em!"
