Can somebody please tell me what the purposes or duties of each: Senators; congressmen; mayors; governors. And also, from the highest position to the lowest ( president to vice president to . . .) How do they all rank from one another?

Senators/Congressmen - make laws for the country.
Mayor - oversees the government of the city or town.
Governor - supervises all the city and town governments.

From highest to lowest position:

1. President, Senators/Congressmen and Justices
2. Vice President
3. Governor
4. Mayor

There is no ranking. President, Senators, and Representatives are basically equal. The Vice President is subordinate to the President but is also the President of the Senate. The Senate is supposed to be the more prestigious of the two Congressional houses. It is really a matter of perspective and jurisdiction. When it comes to one's daily life local governments have more affect than the states or the Federal Government. Simply put a mayor has more affect on your day to day life than a Governor or a President.
