I saw him play in his prime. I would say yes. He made a terrible mistake that he will take to the grave.
He was an incredible player and manager.
Sorry, he made a mistake. We all make mistakes but are not in the forefront of society.
His indecrection will always have people be anti-Rose.
But look at his career and the stats. Yes, he would be the all time best.

Not even close. Ty Cobb is my personal pick for best all-time hitter. He still holds the career record for batting average at .366. He also hit .400 three times!
Ted Williams is high on my list because of his combination of average and power. The year he hit .406 he also had 37 HR. I like Babe Ruth for the same reason. When he hit 60 HR in 1927 he also had a .356 average.
Rose was good. Nothing against him but I would attribute his hits total to longevity more than anything else. His career was .303 and that is not bad but it is not one of the GREAT averages. But when you play in 25 seasons you have to be up there in the hits column.
Was Pete Rose a great hitter? Yes. Should he be in the Hall of Fame? Yes. Is he the greatest hitter of all time? No WAY!

No, he was a great hitter, but not the best. That honor would belong to Ty Cobb or Ted Williams. Rose was a great player and one of the best hitters to ever play the game, but those two were both better pure hitters than Rose.

I think Pete Rose has the most hits of all time, but I dont think he is the best hitter of all times. There are many players that are better hitters than him.

No.
Prolific, yes. He's got the most hits. And the most outs.
But he had minimal power, and when we're looking for THE VERY BEST, and flaw or shortcoming in a player's game has to be taken seriously. Lots of guys had more power than Rose, and had comparable, or better, batting average and on-base skill. So we cross off Rose from the "greatest hitter" debate.
----------
PS. re/his gambling -- Rose did not make a "mistake". Rose made a deliberate decision, repeatedly, which was a monumentally bad decision to make. Bad decisions can come with bad consequences.

Rose has the most hits of all time, but is nowhere close to being the best "hitter" of all time as there are tons of players past and present that have a much higher career batting average, and hit for more power. Ted Williams and Stan Musial are my choices for best all around hitters who could hit for average and power. Albert Pujols is on that path to be that type of player.

IMO not even in the conversation. No power to speak of. Great gap to gap hitter. Made the most of what he had better than just about anyone. Great hitter and a great player without question. Not the best ever.

NO effing way! Ted Williams was the best hitter of all time. he may not have been a power hitter but he knew what pitch was being thrown so he could hit it.

Ty Cobb, Ted Williams, and Tony Gwynn are my choices.
Ted Williams did not play as many years as Rose either, because he served in 2 US wars with distinction. He was also the last man to hit 400 in a season.

He may have the most hits, but he was not the best hitter. There are others who were better, Ted Williams being the best.
