I recommend:

1) Almost aways, that's the check number. The check number is a sequential number that helps you to keep track of the checks you have written. It is also a reference number that allows you to stop a check payment.

Say you wrote a check to pay for car repairs but discovers that the car was not really fixed. You would call the bank and ask to put a stop payment on the check. The bank will ask you "what's the check number?" Then they would stop that check from processing in their system if it hasn't already been cashed.

2) If you look on the bottom of the check, you will see a series of numbers. The first set starting from the left is your bank's ABA routing number, then in the middle you will usually see the check number, same as on the top right corner, then you will have the bank account number. That is how the bank's machines recognizes a check and where to present it for payment.

Your question doesn't indicate which corner - upper or lower - on the right.

The 4 digit number in the top right corner is the sequential number for the check. The next check will have a number 1 greater. The previous check has a number that is 1 less.

The string of numbers along the bottom of the check indicate a number of pieces of information including the account, bank, branch, and check number.

The closest thing to the right lower corner of my checks is in a bit, but it is the magnetic print version of the check number.
