Possible theories? I am in rocking chair 10 feet from it and husband is in bed. Neither of us saw it happen but next door neighbor in apartment heard it too. Chair is heavy oak and a check of the balance later shows it is difficult to knock over. Dog in the house only weighs 18 lbs.

An 18 lb dog can certainly knock over a dining room chair. Even a large cat jumping on it could depending on where it landed on it. Was the chair set firmly in the first place? If the table was jarred or pushed a bit, it would push back on the chair and tilt it, making it easy to fall over.

A ghost, vampire, werewolf or other supernatural entitity is probably the least likely explanation, especially since there is no evidence that they actually exist. There are other natural explanations that need to be considered first, and if/when those are exhausted, only then will you be left with the conclusion, "something we can't yet explain did it".

Chair fell over? It must have been a ghost. Did the door creak? It must have been a ghost. Did you lose your keys? It must have been a ghost.

When it comes to paranormalists, all "anomalies", or things that at first blush don't have an immediately apparent cause, have ghosts as their default explanation. How can they be so sure it wasn't a leprechaun, or that the fabric of space/time ripped for a and turned the rules of the universe upside down for a brief moment?

Given that all of these phenomena have exactly the same amount of evidence supporting their existence (none), why do ghosts have to be the explanation when it could be absolutely anything else in the universe that it causing these anomalies?

Yup i would agree with the others it was a ghost, but I wouldn't be alarmed, try watching ghost hunters on the sci-fi channel on Wednesday nights, if you don't already.
