Lori i am happy it seems you had a good childhood.. some of us learn from our parents how we do not want to be like them and if you are lucky and can pave a pathway in your life that takes you down a different street and you make yourself a productive member of society .... The majority of most Americans have some sort of family dysfunction and have to make a honest effort to change things in our lives so that the next generation is not exposed to chaos and strife .... Look around at the American family, society's violence, extreme drug abuse issues, children being raised without two parents, kids raising kids... I know from my childhood that i had to challenge myself-educate myself and be self reliant :as well, as having compassion for others... I am worried about the next generation{the lost generation}.... so everything is not always peaches ans cream... BUT LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>be true to thy self...................

What did my parents teach me? Oh the list is so long, but here are a few.
1. Money doesn't grow on trees, so don't throw it away.
2. Anything worth while is going to take work.
3. Treat others as you would like to be treated. Take people as you find them, regardless of religion, race, and differences.
4. Know who you are and stay true to that.
5. Have convictions, but be open to the opinions of others.
6. Listen to advice, those who have been there and done that. Life's too short to make all of the mistakes for yourself.
7. The value you put on yourself, is the value others will put on you. If you act cheap, they will treat you as cheap.
8. Be the best you can be - no one can ask for more than that. Just don't sell yourself short.
9. Never be afraid to learn something new.
10. The difference between "I want" and "I need"
11. Marriage takes committment, love alone is not enough. (they have been married 51 years)
Good folks, and I love them.

My parents taught me to be selfless, don't squander my talent, to do my best, and I can always take pride in what I've done. However, to be humble (there will always be people who do anything I can do far better), and above all else understand that everything I will ever have is due to God's blessing and with His blessing's come responsibilities. Thus, be compassionate and never be amused by others suffering.

That is great if your parents taught you that. I had natural confidence. My mother taught me how to run a household. I learned how to pay bills, grocery shop, cook and clean house by the the time I was 14.

The only rule that i was taught was not to bring home any babies. I was given freedom at theage of 16. the funny thing is because i had it i never abused it. My mom trusted me. That is why alot of kids rebel because their parents are too strict.

You have wonderful parents -- you have learned well! I would add to that just one thing:
Develop yourself. Pay attention to your education, to your skills, and sharpen your interest and curiosity. When you pursue your dreams, you will find success. When you find success, you will find yourself surrounded by people that you can love too.
