What exactly does he/she do? Also what are the hours required for the job?

There are no required hours. If they want to be reelected, they show up for votes. They are supposed the represent the people of their district and carry out their wishes. Many do not do that, they carry out their own agenda. That is why so many Republicans lost their house and senate seats in the last election.

A Representative serves 2-year terms, has to be at least 25 years of age, citizen of the United States, and a resident of the district from which they have been elected. As for the duties while in office, they initiate revenue spending bills, they have the power to impeach officials, and they break ties in case of an Electoral College deadlock for President of the United States.
