I have driven it many times from Maryland and North Carolina and it takes at least 3 days if you drive 12-13 hours a day and stop for the night.

Your route: From NY city take I-78 to Harrisburg, Pa and then pick up I-76 and follow that until you get to I-70. Take I-70 west until it runs out in Utah where it intersects with I-15. Take I-15 south to Vegas.

When I have driven this I generally drive as far as St Louis (or close to it) the first day. I usually drive from 7:00 Am to 7:00 PM. Then the next day make Denver, Co the destination. Its a 12 to 13 hour drive from Denver to Vegas. When I-70 runs out and you hit I-15 you have about 4 hours to go.

Bear in mind that once you cross the Mississippi River and pass Kansas City the hotels, gas stations and places to eat go way down. So look at a map and plan your stops for the night, for gas, and eats. You can use the internet to find services in most places. Also, there is a stretch of road west of Grand Junction, Colorado (just as you enter Utah) where there are NO services for 100 miles and there will be a sign reminding you of this; they are not kidding you. So fill up in Grand Junction.

You can do real fast or take your time

From New York City take route 80 west.
I left New Jersey on a Tuesday afternoon and drove all night and got ot DeMoine, Iowa within 24 hours. Then just had to sleep one day.

Okay I went to Mr. Rushmore, so you seem to be in a rush.

Stay on Route 80 west to Denver. That will be two days.
And finally from Denver Route 70 to Route 15 west
I left Denver at 5 a.m. and go here by 3 p.m.

You can safely do it in three days.
