A colleague at the same level as I always feels threatened by my actions and repeatedly picks quarrels, bangs the phone on me and says that I’m always trying to please the Management. I sincerely don't do this and I know that my conscience is clear. How should one deal with this situation? It gets very frustrating and difficult to do work as every action is interpreted as trying to go one up against my colleague.

Ignore him/her. I'm sure that attitude is well known to all your colleagues and superior/s.

I dealt with the same thing. Some people will never understand your work ethics and will look down on you because you work harder than they do. When you are an excellent employee and do your work properly it makes other people uncomfortable because they feel that they MUST step up to your level in order to stay in good graces with management. You cannot befriend, help, or level with people like that on most occasions. However I know that you want a good working environment for yourself and your coworkers. Try giving that person compliments and NEVER show any one that you are hurt by what your colleague says. If you do, that person will continue to beat you with the phone!!! Hope that helps.

Tough situation. Dealing with that kind of stress all day is awful. Your job is to do what management wants done, and so is his.

It doesn't sound as if you are trying to take credit for his work. You might make sure you are pleasing management by good results, not by kissing-up. Maybe the guy would like to do better but cannot work extra because of family obligations or whatever (that often happens to women). He may think you looking good, makes him look bad.

I suggest that you continue to do your best and try to minimize contact with your coworker. Maybe you will be promoted and the problem will solve itself. Good luck.

Very difficult, sorry. I have a problem boss myself, and she acts in competition with me! Weird!

Can you ignore this person for almost everything? Not to be cold, but to get away from the unpleasantness -- what a drag! You know, if it gets too bad, you can always complain about a "hostile work environment," but I would not do that unless absolutely necessary.

Good luck with this. Try to rise above it.

Buy him/her a present. They will be so shocked and will find it hard to be mad at you when you're so nice to them. It'll be a shock to the system and will make them feel very guilty! And you giving him/her a present will do nothing for management, so they can't say you're trying to get ahead at work by giving them a present!

Don't worry. Given enough rope, people like this usually will hang themselves.
Just worry about pleasing your boss. don't let him trap you in a pissing contest. You couldbe the onewho gets wet.
