When you know the etymology, or root of a word, it's easier for you to understand and learn words you never knew before. Lame I know but it helps on the SATs sometimes
Ex. Verisimilitude (and this is the only one I actually know)
Veri: coming from the word truth
Similitude: coming from the word similar
=similar to the truth
Actual definition: the appearance or semblance of truth

Etymology is important because it helps us find the origins of the word and its language where it came from and it does help by this means to describe a definition of a word more accurately to the intended meaning of the language of origin.

While for some, etymology is purely esoteric in nature, knowing the origin of a word, its culture, and its original meaning can assist in intelligent conversations.
It is also essential in integrating various languages with our own culture.
