3.5hp Vert shaft, primer button. engine runs only few seconds-no smoke, no rattles, weakens & stops (sometimes with a backfire). Modest compression pre & post. Cleaned tank & carb, was dirty, diaphram looks undamaged-no splits/creases-two flap tab valves(?) 1 flat, 1 angled, main jet filter easily (re)moveable-(poor design?), main jet passes air (can't remove), motor throttles up & down when heavily primed, new 98 RON-plently, oil ok. plug clean seems ok, as it starts well after prime, air filter cleaned. elect ign type. No choke plate in plastic carb. V long re-inflation time for prime button-mounting O ring ok, no real change. ???

Gas cap vent clean?

It is a carb problem. It needs to be removed, cleaned and a rebuild kit installed. It should be soaked in a good carb cleaner and blown out with compessed air. The passages are tiny and it is difficult to say they are all open. The diaphram can look ok and not be working properly. Make sure the pick up tube and gas tank are clean also.

I hate it when people answer my question with a question, so I apologize up front.
Can you keep it running by squirting gas or starting fluid in the throat of the carb? Does it have a rubber hose for a gas line? I keep a good rubber hose attached to a quart plastic oil can about half filled with gas. Replace this line to the carb. crank it up and squeeze the bottle.
As a last resort I trade out the carb with one I have salvaged from another engine. I am either lucky or un lucky I keep lots of spare parts, (or junk some call it) laying around.
