I know nothing about computers and I'm in the market for a laptop. I was going to get 1GB with windows vista but some people tell me you need 2GB to run that program. I'm mostly using it for email, word processing, and looking at pictures from my camera. I guess I might load other programs as necessary, like turbotax. Is 1GB enough? And what are good brands? Price is important, but I'd rather pay a little more to get something that I can use for a long time.

If your laptop is running Windows XP, 1GB is fine for the type of use you've described.

Vista is more of a resource hog, and requires more RAM just to run smoothly. I recommend looking at Toshiba laptops, they have excellent performance and solid support.

Toshiba makes good laptops. 1GB is a lot of memory, but if you want even more, 2GB is a great amount of memory. To run Windows Vista, you need at least 1GB. You shouldn't get Windows Vista, though, because it's horrible. Just because it's the newest product from Microsoft doesn't mean that it has to be the best. Windows XP is the best; trust me. I had experience with both XP and Vista.

One GB is probably enough.

Too many variables involved like screensize, usage, etc. to make a choice of model for you. I like the top seller HP, they seem to offer the best value. This is their 15.4 inch model:

HP
Model: HP Pavilion dv6560us (Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Vista Home Premium)
Screen Size: 15.4 inches
Weight: 6 lbs
Processor Options: Core 2 Duo
Graphics Options: nVidia Go 8400m (Dedicated)
Description: The HP dv6500t is a 15.4" screen laptop with Centrino Duo technology, optional web camera and Nvidia graphics or integrated
Specs: Intel Core 2 Duo (1.8 GHz) , 1 GB DDR II SDRAM

My source link does reviews of all the models and will give you free advice on it's forum.

1GB would be ok but the new graphics that vista has would make the computer run slow. For Vista, I recommend 2GB to make everything work better and that Vista graphics does not drain your hole memory before you can use it.

For Vista 1GB is reccomended, but it can run on as low as 512MB. People who said the minimum for Vista is 2GB are either stupid, or liers, because that's just completely blatantly wrong. Check my source if you don't believe me.

1 Gig is plenty for XP. Vista is more suitable for 2 Gigs.

Just about all rams are equal. If you buy Kingston you are just buying a name.

1 is enough but you need 2 to run vista so that means that 1 is not really an option. so 2GB it is.
