Although the full moon occurring Thursday, May 31, 2007, will look like an ordinary full moon, it will actually be a bit extraordinary—a blue moon.

What is a Blue Moon?
There are in fact two definitions for a blue moon. According to the more recent definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. For a blue moon to occur, the first of the full moons must appear at or near the beginning of the month so that the second will fall within the same month (the average span between two moons is 29.5 days). May 2007 will have two full moons: the first on May 2, the second on May 31—that second full moon is called the blue moon.

Note that the May 31 date applies to most of the Western Hemisphere, including the United States. In the Eastern Hemisphere, the full moon in question will occur on June 1. For that half of the world, the blue moon will be on June 30, 2007.

I hope this answers your question.

Take Care and God Bless !

A cute name for the second full moon in a month. This can happen because the moon takes 29+ days to go from full moon to full moon while a month is about 30-1/2 days on the average. This May has a blue moon.

Most of the time, there's only one full moon per month. But sometimes there's two, and the second is called a "blue moon" due to a confusing naming mix-up from an old almanac or something like that. It's not actually blue. When people say "once in a blue moon," they mean rarely, since blue moons don't happen very often.

The 2nd full moon of a month. It happens 7 times every 19 years or once in a blue moon.

I see that you've already got alot of answers, but a blue moon is the second full moon in one month. Usually only one full moon is usually present a month, but in the case that there is a second it is called a blue moon.

The older definition of blue moon is for an extra full moon that occurs in a quarter of the year, which would normally have three full moons, but sometimes has four. Oddly, it is the third full moon in a season that has four which is counted as the "extra" full moon and named blue moon
