I realize a remote access solution like LogMeIn is an option, but not the best one in this case as I would prefer that the remote computer did not have that kind of access to the host computer.

I would like to store the quickbooks data file on the host computer and use it from the remote computer, but have that be the only function used. Both computers could potentially have high-speed internet connections, or would some type of dedicated wireless connection be better?

Lastly, it is important to accomplish this as cost effective as possible. Thanks

If both already have broadband internet, just setup a VPN (virtual private network) on them. One end will need a VPN server the other just make a VPN connection within add network connections. When you connect both will have LOCAL ip addresses and become like local machines.

The downside to this is the bandwidth available, QB likes 10mb minimum which most VPN simply cant supply. It will work but the remote machine may be slow when accessing the data.

If you can mount a point to point wireless system it will deliver the best performance. You can get 5.8 gig or 2.4 gig point to point systems starting around 300/end. It isn't the cheapest method but will give you the best performance. If there are hills etc between it wont work so check a topographical map before choosing this method -- better yet hire a consultant who does this.. (there are some available)

Not a connection, but more of an alternative.

You could always just get a flash drive and save your file to that, then run it from the flash drive on the other computer (as long as it has the required program). Flash drives range anywhere from 20 dollars on up, depending on how much you want to be able to store on it.

All you need is for both computers to have a USB 2.0 compatible USB Port, in order to recognize the flash drive (Win XP should automatically find and install all the drivers needed to run the flash drive).

Tracy is genuine . an undemanding VPN setup is all you desire . The study in basic terms is there because of the fact the excel document is presently in use ..ask your self what experience might it make to have extra then one consumer having access to and enhancing the excel document on a similar time ? how might the cells or sums artwork ?

Well, it is possible to go 1.5 to 2 miles with 802.11g but you need tightly focused antennas, and it will only work line-of-sight, so you would have to get the antennas as high as possible and make sure that there is nothing in between them.
