Personally, I wouldn't leave anything in any car, whether it's my car or not. Theres too much of a temptaion for someone to steal a purse or a wallet out of a car if they spot it in there.

I have water, paper towels, stadium blanket, rain slicker, hand wipes, pair of tennies, money, dry non-perishable food like cheese crackers/pretzels, flashlight, flares, small radio, first aid kit. Got used to carrying this stuff when I lived in California (earthquake country).

I just carry general stuff (alongside the phone, wallet and penknife that I always carry in my pockets).
-The tools ready to fix or bodge it in case of a breakdown (including pump).
-Water to top up the cooling system and windscreen washers.
-Bungee cords (to tie stuff down).
-A chain to secure a trailer to the car.
-A waxy (wax cotton coat).
