A bottle was broken while he was weedeating and a small shard of the glass flew up and lodged in his calf. He says that he can feel it shifting when he's on his feet for long periods of times. He cleaned it out well but couldn't get to the glass to retrieve it. It doesn't seem to be infected but I have heard that it is possible for objects that have been lodged in the body and not removed to actually travel throughout the body causing worse damage later on. Should he go to the doctor and have it removed?

What kind of a question is that???

Of course you should always have any foreign object removed whenever possible.

Seems like some people will believe anything. Whatever happened to critical thinking and doing some research? Glass is known to be one of the most stable materials on earth, which is why it's used to contain chemicals that will eat away many other materials such as metal and plastic. I can't imagine that tapping a bottle will release microscopic shards of glass into vodka. If that kind of thing were possible, then it would also happen with much stronger chemicals during shipping and handling, contaminating them so they'd probably be of little use in their intended purpose. And if the glass did in fact release such particles, they'd be so small that they would be very unlikely to cut you. You could probably swallow sand without cutting your throat, so how would microscopic particles of glass do that?

Obviously, the answer is a definite yes! What would be the benefit of keeping a shard of glass in his calf? Aside from the discomfort, it could cause infection or other complications. The removal would be relatively quick and painless, and done under a local anesthetic such as novocaine, so I would recommend seeing the doctor as soon as possible.

don't dig in the leg tissues and don't worry about the glass traveling. after a long soak in the tub or shower, have him try to remove the glass. if this doesn't work, go to an urgent care. keep the leg clean and dry.

YES! It could get infected. Maybe not now - but it can get infected later! Try to get it out with tweezers - if it doesn't work - go to the doc!

Depends, if he wants to have the chance to have his leg amputated, then don't go.
