I am in need of a lab coat and safety glasses for my job as laboratory technition for a water testing lab. I could wear the lab coats that are there, but they have all seen better days and don't quite fit just right. Safety glasses are never around when you need then and are scratched. I am looking for something with lots of character.

Part of riding a motorcycle is making decisions and accpeting the consequences. Choose what gear you want to wear, be aware of the level of protection you have and ride accordingly. A helmet is really a no brainer (no pun intended), but you have to make your own decisions regarding what style. A closed face gives better protection agains face planting the road, and also against bugs and bits of crap that try to get in your eyes. There are people who believe an impact to the chin bar can have a damaging affect to your spine however. An open face is cooler and less claustrophobic, but basically leaves your face unprotected (may be worth keeping one for summer, one for winter?) Denim is just about useless as protective gear, it lasts something like 1 second when being slid across the road. You can get jeans with kevlar sown into them (Draggins, Hornees), and they are a bit better. Textile / kevlar armoured jackets are better, but the best is leather (it's also the hottest). I live in Perth Western Australia where it gets very hot in summer (40 deg celsius plus regularly) and find a leather jacket and jeans is usually about as much as I can stand. You need to take into account that if you are very hot or dehydrated you are less able to concentrate and may be more likely to crash. No good wearing full leathers if they cause you to run off the road because you are so thirsty! I have ridden in just normal work clothes as well, it offers about zero protection, but is definitely more comfortable on a very hot day. Like I said, make your decision and be prepared to live with the consequences!
