I'm no expert on robotics (I'm in the closely related hobby RC biz), but it depends on what you mean by affordable.

For affordability period, there's the stuff Lego makes. It's available at some Fry's stores and on the internet... Not sure which websites, though. About $200

For the extremely serious stuff, maybe something from Hitec Robotics http://www.hitecrobotics.com/ would work. Their servos from their RC side of business are great, so their robots should be, too! You can buy them at Tower as a kit http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLWC1&P=7
or a RTW http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLWC0&P=7
Unfortunately expect to pay $1200!!!
