right at first my son was going through about 8-10 diapers a day! Now (at 15 months) he only uses 4-5 diapers a day (and he never fit in newborn diapers...so I would recommend only stocking up on one pack of newborns...and one pack of the next size up)
I breastfed so I can't be much help on the formula question :)
(My girlfriend's daughter was on formula and she told me she was buying a can a week.)

Be prepared to get a second job (lol) just kidding. I never realized just how expensive formula and diapers were until I had my baby. She is now 7 months old and am looking forward to the day the formula stops. To answer your question it will vary from month to month. The average cost of formula will be 22-25 dollars a week depending where you buy it. You might want to start out with the smaller cans first. My daughter had allergies to Good Start so we had to switch a few times until we ended up giving her Pro So Bee. New babies soil diapers more frequently. You can expect to change 10-12 diapers per day. Again you will want to try a few different kinds of diapers to see which kinds you like best. I liked the pamper swaddlers when she was first born, but wont use anything now except Huggies. I usually buy the jumbo packs which last us awhile. When you go shopping estimate that you will change about 70-85 diapers a week. You may want to visit certain websites such as pampers/huggies and sign up to receive special offers. I get coupons for 1 to 3 dollars off all the time in the mail. Same with the formula companies. I was never a coupon clipper until I became a mom. Now I stand at the check out line in Walmart digging through my purse to find that 2 dollar coupon off huggies. LOL If you have a Walgreens drug store in your area they have specials all the time on formula and diapers. Good Luck to you and CONGRATULATIONS!

Our baby is now 6 months old. We go through about one of the 25.7oz cans of powdered formula each week (that's been consistent throughout the first 6 months). Originally we were doing the Kirkland brand from Costco that costs about $20 for two 25.7oz cans, but switched to soy after we found out our daughter had eczema that was worsened by milk based formula. So now she's on the Parent's Choice Soy from Walmart that costs about $14 per 25.7oz can.
Diapers: We use Huggies and get them at Costco. Each case is about $40 and lasts about a month (as the sizes get bigger there's fewer in a case, but that correlates to using fewer each day or month also). The size 1-2 case has 228 diapers in it, which was just about a month's worth.
If you don't have a Costco or Sams Club nearby, you can buy large cases of diapers on www.amazon.com/grocery You have the added bonus of having them delivered to you for free and you don't have to pay sales tax (which saves 6-8% right there depending on which state you live in).

It certainly does vary but, I can tel you about my guy who was born on Monday. He would not wake to feed (formula not breast) I was told to feed every 4hrs but he wouldnt taKE MORE THAN SAY 3O-45ML AT A TIME so I started feeding every three hrs and lo and behold (I dont believe the feeding time made a diff.. just he had a cpl days to sleep off the birth :) he now will cry and eat a gd 50-60ml every 3-4 hrs.... I guess I am trying to say that all babies are different but if your guy does not wake every cpl hrs like they say he will dont worry!!!! also he wont mess alot of diapers at first... and the first cpl days it will be black and tarry poop and no smell... after a day or so ( got to give the babe some time to digest the food before they start wetting) it will lood 'seedy' like soft sesame seeds and be a different color... green brown something along those lines... thats normal.. it means he is taking in milk and digesting it. you should have an appt with the Dr within the first week of the birth I would recommend writing down how often and how much the babe eats as well as the # of diapers and any questions... the babe will lose weight after the birth too... do not worry.. perfectly normal and No.. You Are Not A Terrible Mother For Starving Your Child :) my guy was 7lb 10oz and today at the Dr he was 7lb even... so relax and congrats!!!!

Well here in Canada I am budgeting for breastfeeding. So for diapers I am thinking to budget too much rather than too little. A baby goes through 10-12 diapers max every 24 hours. Walmart has packages of 40 for $10. So I budgeted about $100 a month. As they get bigger the diapers fit less in a package, but then they won't use as many. Plus at Costco, I am going to buy bulk. Also, if the baby has diarhea or we are home all day and he has no diaper rash, I will use cloth occassionally. So here, about $100 a month

I go through about 160-180 diapers per month for my 7 month old. Even as a newborn my son didn't have more than one or two stools per day so if your baby is breastfed or simply 'goes' more you will go through more diapers than this. I'd figure on 10 per day at least in the beginning.
As for formula, in the earlier months I went through about 3 of those little 12 oz cans a week or 1 1/2 of the 25 oz bigger cans. Now my son takes solids so we only go through 1-25oz can a week.
A word of advice: generic formula is just as good as the name brand stuff, and you can save big bucks. Try the Target brand or Parent's Choice. I pay $13.50 per 25 oz can....before I was paying $26 for Similac!
As far as diapers, I am kind of a name brand snob here. I love Pampers because they are so stretchy. I haven't found a store brand to give quite the same comfortable fit.
Congratulation on the new addition to your family.

Your newborn will pee about 8 times a day. Expect to change him every time he wakes. Expect to feed him every time he wakes. For the first month you will need about 8-10 diapers a day, and enough formula to make 8 4oz of formula a day. Some of the formula will probably go to waste, but you don't wanna underfeed. Your baby will know when hes full. Assume that at first you will be feeding him when he's not hungry, and changing him when hes not wet.
HOWEVER, you don't know what his allergies are, so don't buy a lot of one formula. You don't know how quick he will grow, so don't buy a lot of one size of diaper. Unless you don't have anyone who can go to the store for you, you don't want to buy too much of something you may not use.

At first, at least one pack of diapers per week, if not more. Not as much formula because they don't eat as much. But, very quickly that changes. Right now, my son is 8 months old, and we go through almost 2 large cans of formula per week, (plus baby food) and 1 1/2 packs of diapers. Clip your coupons!!

It does vary from baby to baby, but the following answer is from experience with my 1 & 2 year olds.
Formula - you will use an average of one tin of formula per week. The first few months may be one & a half tins per week.
Nappies - I would go through a box of Huggies (bulk buy - 108 newborn nappies) every fortnight.
