Black holes have nothing to do with theology. Its physics my friend.
The stars are not there for any purpose. They are there because of gravity. Over billions of years gases come together because of their gravitational attraction to each other. At a point the stars become so massive that their large gravity makes them very dense and hot. Eventual temperatures reach the point where nuclear fusion readily occurs and wala! We have a shining star.
Now for black holes:
How many black wholes are on the universe? that's like saying how many stars are in the universe? or how many grands a sand are on the beach? But heres a few numbers to wrap you head around. There are about a billion stars in our galaxy, the milky way. It is estimated by cosmologists that there are about a billion or so Galaxy's in the universe.
Why should there be black holes at all? Well fist you must understand what one is. From the point of view of astronomy, a black hole is a collapsed star. After a star burns all its fuel it may collapse under its gravity and become a black hole. Its gravity is so strong that not even light can escape. That's why its called "black"
There is a back hole at the center of our galaxy. The sun orbits around it.
From the physics point of view a black hole is one of the many possible solutions to Einstein's equations of general relativity. AN object may become a black hole if it meets the criteria of the Schwarzechild equation.
now from a physics stand point.

There are probably hundreds of trillions of black holes in the universe. We are very sure massive stars eventually collapse into black holes but no one knows why there are black holes at the center of almost all galaxies. These black holes contain mass equivalent to millions or billions of stars. They may be left over bits of the singularity that existed at the time of the Big Bang or may have grown as stars crashed together or it could be some other reason.
Its doubtful there is any purpose for the universe and religious texts have utterly no scientific value. Science has unlocked the secrets of the universe, not religion.

There is a theory floating around that every galaxy has a black hole at its center. This is what keeps the galaxy rotating in its flattened, disk-like rotation. Same with clusters, super clusters, and local groups. They too possibly have black holes at their centers, only on a larger scale. Black holes and gravity are what keeps the universe moving. The reason why black holes cause such large groups and bodies to rotate around them (in theory) is because they have an infinite gravity well.Think of a bath tub with a drain in the middle and it's full of water with plastic balls. Now, you pull the plug, and start a rotation (Big Bang theory). Now start adding as much water as what is being drained to keep balance(stars being born and dying). There you are.

There are probably as many black holes as galaxies
If you mean "why is there anything" we have no idea.
Science has not proven that religious texts are "right". They may get one particular fact correct, but the vast majority of them are dead wrong.
There is no purpose

stars are there to light the night for one thing. and because they're pretty and amazing...God likes to give us gifts. i know that there's only one black hole in the center of the milky way galaxy (we're on the outside edge...it makes sense if you see the picture). they're just how stars die. maybe because there's sin in the world and everything has to die, stars and planets have to die too.

If you are so certain that the religious texts tell us all we have to know, you have only to read them. What is your explanation?
