I have a 1996 chevy lumina v6 3.1. The primary fan wont kick on when the car gets hot..so it runs too hot...the ac fan does kick on when the ac is turned on. I have checked all the fuses,
checked the fan motors both work, replaced the temperature control module and the pcm/ecm/computer.
If the temp control module is unplugged both fans will run constant.
I noticed temp get hotter when city driving and the temp is always normal when highway driving..I never drive city so this problem could have been there for quite sometime...however i did power wash off the engine a few weeks ago. I have used my manual to go over all possible problems that it had in it and i cant seem to find the problem...I greatly appreciate any help i can get...this is driving me nuts.
thanks

You checked the fuses but you havent checked the relay. When you unplug the temp control is there a click? If there is then the relay is fine. There could be an earth wire you have managed to knock off when washing it this may cause the problem. If all else fails hook it up to an ignition source so it constantly runs until you turn the ignition off...

I chased that problem on my 91 camaro w/ 3.1 years back. The gauge showed it was running close to 250 degrees but it never boiled the coolant out of the reservoir. After replacing the radiator, water pump, coolant sensor, temp sender and thermostat, I still hadn't corrected the problem. I finally found in a service manual that the computer doesn't turn on the cooling fan until the temp reaches 265 degrees. I didn't like that so I purchased a thermostat setup for an auxillary cooling fan and wired it into the fan relay with a switch where i could have the computer control the fan or the auxillary thermostat control it and that worked out good.

there's a switch on the engine called a temperature sensor its possible this is bad,it sends a signal to the computer and that kicks the module in on it,if that little switch goes out ,the fan will not kick on,its doing right if both of them came on when you unplugged the module, that's a fail safe built in to them in case the module does out ,so that part is alright, try finding the switch ,and replacing that ,i cant tell you where its at on this one ,but its somewhere around the thermostat housing ,good luck i hope that's it.

I can't answer all your question, but all cars seem to run hotter in slow city traffic and cooler on the highway, because on the highway you have the air from the speed you are driving coming through the radiator.
