Bloody Mary sings "my head sticking out from a low flying cloud" and on the word "cloud" the orchestra sounds like its playing a little of Debussy's piece, "Nuages". Is this deliberate or am i just imagining it? Anyone know?

Rodgers and Hammerstein were very good at word painting in musical theatre. It may sound like Debussy, but it was not intentionally a musical allusion. R&H were just using a romanticized musical convention that happened to be Debussy-eque. "Bali H'ai" actually uses several musical conventions that were associated with the late Romantic period. It's not to say that R&H weren't influenced by Debussy...it just wasn't as deliberate as say Jonathan Larson using the lick from "Quando me'n vo" in Rent.

I don't believe it was deliberate. However, think of some songs by Eric Carmen that are taken from classical tunes.

A small part of a melody can be given to many different songs.

Really interesting thought though. BTY, I love the soundtrack from South Pacific.

Hi. It may sound like it but i am not sure.Composers of musicals might "borrow "classical phrases but there is no way to be sure.If you study all the musical soundtracks there are bound to be nearly identical sections but it would be hard to retain all the music in your head to do this .
