Do you think your dog is aware of what's going on? That there's more going on than immediate impulse, need, and reaction? What about when dogs are just idly sitting there, what's going on in their head? It can't be nothing...

My dogs are very aware of what is happening around them. They really are just like little humans, but they can't speak the same language as the people. I understand most of what they are saying to me and they usually understand what I'm saying to them. Sometimes, they almost convince me to bark at the mailman with them. Then I remember that I'm in charge, and not them!

Of course. haven't you ever noticed how happy they are when they know they're making you laugh? Or they way they'll sit by you and put their heads on your lap when you're sad? Mine can even tell the difference between my car and a strange one pulling up in the driveway. When they hear my car, they're waiting at the door, jumping up and down and practically saying, "Hi, mom! Glad you're home!"

Yes, I think they are quite aware of everything. Our emotions, our habits, and our schedule. They try to make us happy (most of them) and love it when they get their side of our happiness. They usually notice things that we don't have time to stop and look at. We learn from them sometimes, instead of the other way around.
