People are stupid and don't listen to the teachers who attempt to teach them the correct uses. I take a point off of any student's paper when he/she makes this type of mistake. I also give my students ways to remember the distinctions (loose has an extra o loose in it, while lose has lost one).

Because too many people spend hours watching TV and not reading and they have no idea how to spell. It's rather sad that we expect to teach our children how to read through products like: Baby Einstein DVDs and Leapfrog, when all that's truly required is a book, a light, and patience as you read "Go Puppy, Go" for the one thousandth time.

Perhaps they think that 'lose' would have the same sound as 'those' or 'hose'.
'Loose' kind of looks like it would be correct, if you are not very familiar with English spelling.

Well, certain wording does make me crazy. Your example is one of mine! Also, there's a commercial for a mattress that Jacqueline Smith does...where she says 'Craftmanship'. It's not CRAFT manship...it's craftSmanship!
Okay, okay...I know I'm nitpicky.
