What is the best major for someone like that?
He will be going to trade school after graduation to learn car mechanics or surveying or something like that.
In the meantime, he has tried computer engineering and now civil engineering, and it's not working out. He is not successful at these majors.
He's gone to college for 3 years now, although I think he has a sophomore standing at present.
Any suggestions on a college, also? The one he is at now is too hard for him. He got a 21 on the ACT in math, and just a composite score of 22 on the ACT total.

He will be going to trade school--after he graduates from college. I just wanted to know if any MEN had any advice for what a good college major would be for someone who is probably pretty average intellectually and good with his hands. I really don't want to hear from women, sorry ladies, but I need to know if another GUY has been thru this. Thanks anyway, ladies.

I would suggest getting a degree in Building Construction or Construction Management or Geomatics (Land Surveying).

Don't put your eggs in one basket. There are technical careers in the music industry that pay well and can actually be of use while you're waiting to get a break as a performer. A degree in Electrical Engineering is a solid foundation for audio engineering. It's also very helpful to know about audio electronics, sound physics, and general business/entrepreneurship. A lot of new artists are entirely producing their own music, from start to finish, like Deadmau5 and Skrillex. Research the Deadmau5 studio. Getting a solid base of engineering isn't a waste of time when you can really use it. You don't necessarily have to finish the degree by doing 4 full-time years. Focus on doing all the relevant classes for the audio engineering side of the EE major. There's lots of cool and fun electronics classes that you can relate to music. A lot of music is electro-something. Plus, there's nothing keeping you from doing lots of music while you're in school. I took several electronic music classes just for fun because the university had a music production studio and a bunch of synths, plus some professors who really knew their stuff and who had connections in the music biz. It's OK to take only the classes that give you the most for the money, then leave the general ed stuff for later if you want to return to school. A lot of very successful people have done that, including Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Steve Wozniak, who took only what they wanted from college while they were doing other interesting things at the same time.

Why can't women have an opinion?
Even though I am a woman, I have worked with mechanical engineers, and that is a very hands-on field. They are usually the ones fixing and tinkering with machinery in factories.
Another field is chemistry. I am an analytical chemist, and it is all working with my hands. (How shocking, I know, a woman in a hands-on career). In fact, most scientific fields will involve some working with hands, if you go into research. Art is also very hands-on.
But, if he is going to go to a trade school for a career, then it doesn't matter what his bachelor's degree is in. Get it in whatever you want.

He should learn to be an electrician, industrial mechanic or heating and air conditioning technician. He can graduate with an associate degree in two years. Most communities have an accredited technical college. Try ITT technical college. These are very good paying and secure careers.
