Watching an old lady or an old man? It BREAKS my heart to see a little old man trying to cross the street, etc...while ladies...not so much. Why is that???

Tootsie...I love your answer and/but think I got the opposite perception...when I was on the subway in NYC and an old lady got on I stood up to give her my seat she yelled at me that she didn't need me to do so (in not so many nice words). I guess it's all about experience.

Both... when I was in my teens ... about 13, an older very pretty lady, maybe 75 got on the bus, and I could tell she must have been absolutely stunning in her younger days, and I smiled at her, she gave me a bright smile back, and as she approached her stop, she leaned down and said .. "You don't know how much your smile meant to me, thanks so much, so many younger and right past us, like we aren't here, and forget that we were once young too" and with that she smiled and left... but after that I made a point of helping elderly people, smiling at them, looking to see if there is any way I can help... they appreciate it more than we even realize.
Why man more than woman? Maybe because traditionally man is a symbol of strength, physical strength, and to see him struggling is opposite of how it SHOULD be...
Be blessed love! Great post.. very thought provoking=)

I have to agree with kee kee. My father died before he was 70 and he was just as strong then as I always remembered. Mother died at 90. While mothers last few years were a bit of a challenge and I hated that she had problems. We did everything we could do to see that she was as happy as possible.
But, I know I could not have watched my father become more and more frail and I am glad I did not see that. I could never handle my fathers' serious illnesses -though there were few, but I could manage with mothers problems and there were many when she was younger.
I loved them each equally. So that had nothing to do with the different feelings.

Possibly, because men are more of a symbol of physical strength than women...and to see a man in this condition, would imply more of a degenerative state of physical health...I agree it is very sad....Nursing homes are the worst...I know,I just watched my Father die in one.

Probably because men are supposed to be strong and manly, and women are usually seen as dainty and fragile. So to see a dainty, fragile man is odd.
