Which video card should I buy for a non gamer and a AMD Athlon 64 X2?

XFX GeForce 8500GT 256MB PCI Express Video Card, model no. PVT86JUAF3 for $80

or

HIS Radeon X1650 Pro 256MB PCI Express Video Card, model no. H165PRF256NR for $88.

Your advise would be most appreciated.

Their performance would be similar in games. However, 8500GT would excel in video w/ Nvidia's PureVideoHD. 8500GT is also a DX10 card, so it is more future-proof. Go, get the 8500GT.

Humm that is a good question

Specs for the 8500

Manufacturer: nVidia
Series: GeForce 8
GPU: G86
Release Date: 2007-04-17
Interface: PCI-E x16
Core Clock: 450 MHz
Memory Clock: 400 MHz (800 DDR)
Memory Bandwidth: 12.8 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 7200 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 3600 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 3600 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 1800 MVertices/sec

And the ATI

Manufacturer: ATi
Series: Radeon X1K
GPU: RV570
Release Date: 2007-05-01
Interface: PCI-E x16
Core Clock: 400 MHz
Memory Clock: 400 MHz (800 DDR)
Memory Bandwidth: 12.8 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 9600 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 3200 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 3200 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 800 MVertices/sec

Humm seem almost the same but the ATI can have 12 Pipelines which will make it much better but only in over clocked versions. So the Nvidea will prob be the best Buy

if you want to know more go to http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=514&card2=517 that has the 2 compared togather

of course you can spend in extra $400 on the 8800 that dominates all :)

In America both brands are well known...

Anyway, I would also reccomend the 8500GT because of the fact that it supports DX10. It's not a great card, but for use on non-gaming stuff (unless you're doing heavy 3D rendering) it will work great on just about everything else. The X1650Pro performs similarly, but it's only DX9, which is why I wouldn't get it.

I would reccomend getting the 8500GT mostly because it supports DirectX10. Neither of the cards are very good gaming cards and in terms of performance you won't notice a difference. A good place to check up on these things is Toms Hardware Guide's Graphics card comparison chart. They test every card they can get ahold of and give it a rating in terms of performance.

They also do monthy articles on the best card for each price segment so check it out.
