The Americans won the battle of Midway against the Japanese. Many historians consider this the turning point in the battle for the Pacific in World War II.

Here is a really good synopsis of the battle; a crippling blow to the Japanese fleet.

The U.S. Navy decisively defeated the IJN during the Battle of Midway in 1942. The Americans, with 3 carriers formed in two separate groups, sunk 4 Japanese carriers with the loss of one of theirs, the USS Yorktown. The Yorktown was actually sunk by a Japanese submarine as it was being evacuated and preparing to be towed after suffering crippling damage during the battle. The IJN fought gamely for another 3 years, but their iniative was completely lost, and from here on in, they were on the defensive. A brilliant victory.

The US Navy. After naval signals intelligence determined conclusively that the Japanese fleet was headed toward the US base on Midway, the US Pacific fleet sortied to meet it. After much action in which both sides effectively wandered around til they stumbled across one another, USN aircraft caught the Japanese carriers with their aircraft on deck refueling and rearming--and nearly defenseless. The end result was decisive: the USN lost one carrier and a few smaller ships; the IJN lost four carriers (all of which had participated in the attack on Pear Harbor six months before) and, more importantly, at least 360 trained and experienced pilots--and the initiative. While there remained nearly three years of fighting to defeat Japan's forces, they never again were able to expand their holdings.

The US Navy.
The Japanese Navy lost four of its six large carriers (Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, and Soryu) in the battle along with the majority of its elite naval pilots. Japan was forced to retreat from the battle without landing troops at Midway. The lose of so many carriers was something Japan could not afford and never was able to recover from.

for the european theatre, the battle of normandy (D-Day), and the battle of stalingrad weakened the german infantry. battle of britain weakened the german air force. and the battle of kursk weakened the german tank divisions. for the germans, the battle of the bulge was almost a victory for the germans if it weren't for Pattons 3rd army. the only battle that i find the germans had a chance of winning the war by being victorious, was when the germans took paris. if the germans would have defeated the allies on d-day, i think the germans would have been victorious in the european theatre. by defeating the allies (if it happened), the axis would have halted the aliied force, and they would be able to keep their grip on europe. i hoped this helped
