The Portuguese language is based in Latin, if that is what you base the reasoning for saying the culture is Latino, then, by the same logic, you have to consider the French and Italians also Latino. The Portuguese are neither Hispanic nor Latino; they are either European or Lusitanian or Portuguese.
The confusion in America usually stems from the fact, in years past, many of the immigrants moved to predominately Spanish speaking areas, because it is easier to understand Latin based Spanish then Germanic based English. In Canada, they could also move to the Latin based French areas to make the transition easier, but does that make them Gallic? This is not so much a problem anymore, because the younger Portuguese folk speak better English over there than I hear over here.
To push the Portuguese into the Spanish culture does a disservice to both; they are both unique in their own right. It would be like saying Canadians or Mexicans are really Americans, just because their countries are attached to ours.

I am a portuguese, living in Portugal, here's what i think:
That term, "latino", was invented by the americans to designate the people coming from Central and South America, usually people who ancestors were native americans and europeans.
So, obviously, that term "latino" cannot be applied to us, portuguese, doesn't makes sense.
Although I realize it can become confusing since our language and culture is of latin origin, because Portugal was one of the countries belonging to the Roman Empire, the original latins.
A note, Portugal and Spain are not the same in any way and never were, the fact that they are side by side may lead people to think that but it's not true:
- Portugal is 900 years old
- Spain is 500 years old
- Portugal constitutes a single entity, culturally and politically.
- Spain is the union of several kingdoms and regions, Galicia, Andalucia, Castilla, Catalunya, Navarra, Léon, Asturias, Basque Country... each of these, especially the Basques and the Cataláns have their own language and culture.
Even in terms of behaviour the portugese and the spanish couldn't be more different, as anyone who has ever been to both countries could see.

Nelly Furtado is Portuguese, but was raised in Canada. She considers herself 'Latina'. I've known a few other Portuguese people (in America) and they consider themselves Latin for the most part.
However, people directly from Portugal will say they are European, but their culture is Latin.

Those from Spain are offended to be labeled "Hispanic" or "Latin". They are Spanish ONLY. Portugal is basically part of Spain. Some Porteuguese will accept the Latin Label, but they are very proud of their heritage and just prefer Porteuguese only.

Portuguese
Some people at my school are Portuguese and if they called themselves Latinos, the Mexicans would probably jump them. They just call themselves Portuguese and separate themselves away from the mexicanos y cubanos.
Its kinda not right, but that's just the way it is here. :(

I'd be proper if you asked someone from Brazil or Portugal rather than random people to see what they prefer.
As to the comment from TRAILERPARKBOB..
Yes, you disowned them, but, not before you took all the wealth to Europe. Not to mention how you raped/enslaved and committed atrocities throughout the Americas and left it in a state now looked at as a THIRD WORLD.. maybe us Indians all along could of taught you something about being civilized eh...?
