What sort of a rabbit bedding is the best to put into their cage?

Hay or straw. Pine and cedar shavings are not recommended as bedding. Not only do they exude potentially harmful aromatic compounds that can cause respiratory irritation and interfere with proper liver function, but they also are not absorbent. Basically, shavings make really lousy litter.

Fresh hay is important for these reasons:
1)Provides necessary long fiber that your rabbit needs for healthy digestion.
2)Wears down teeth. Rabbits front teeth grow on average one-half inch each month. Most pellet feeds don't do enough and your otherwise gentle pet may begin chewing on it's cage and anything else it can find.
3)Many pellet feeds are nutrient rich. If not balanced with hay, these feeds may cause your rabbit to be overweight and lethargic. Dark, soft stool or dark colored and very strong smelling urine can be a sign that your rabbit needs more hay.
4)Reduces waste odor and helps to keep the cage cleaner.

If your rabbit is a light enough breed to keep in a cage with a wire bottom floor, the best answer is none. It's a lot easier to keep a rabbit clean with a wire bottom floor than it is if you have to use bedding.

Normally, if the adult weight is 11 pounds or less for a breed it can be kept on a wire floor cage. If the adult weight is over 11 pounds, then I'd recommend using a solid floor and bedding.

Here are my three favorite choices as far as bedding in the order that I like them

1) Ground up corn cobs - very absorbent
2) Wood shavings
3) Straw
